Eleven Thoughts

Eleven random thoughts to brighten your day!

1. Today's special. Eleven has been my lucky number for ages. It was my number in school sports and always my go-to number for "pick a number between..." There was 11 people in my family growing up. And if it wasn't so gosh-darn-many, I would have 11 kids. I'm happy to be alive today to experience an 11-11-11.

2. Just a word of advice- It's a BAD idea to look through old high school pictures when you're 9 months pregnant. Not only do I miss being agile and able to play this sport, I miss being able to fit into a normal t-shirt. And I miss having a proportional figure. And I miss having fingers that didn't resemble hot dogs. I should have looked up People of Walmart instead.

3. Speaking of being pregnant, I had a doc appointment yesterday. I'm so done with this pregnancy thing. Let it end. I decided I should write a book called "What NOT to say to a Pregnant Woman". It would include phrases like, "my, you are a puffy one!", "You STILL have 4 weeks left?!", "Wow, you're HUGE!"

4. It's Veteran's Day. We don't have any stellar Veteran's Day traditions. I'll have to work on that. Regardless of our lack of festivities, I'm grateful to Veterans. I admire them and their families. What a selfless service they perform!

5. Mr. H has been way into imaginative play lately. One favorite game is to pretend to be a tiger. I abhor this game. It involves a lot of pouncing and growling and clawing. If he's not a tiger, then it's some sort of sharp-toothed dino. Equally rough. Boys will be boys.

6. My sweet Great Aunt Geneva passed away about a week ago, and we've been celebrating her life this week with the funeral services. She was the most beautiful woman, as was evident by the huge numbers of people who swarmed her viewing and funeral. Even though we only saw her on occasion, she was the type of person who made an impact on you in the few seconds you had with her.

7. It also was my grandma's birthday, and because of the funeral services we were able to spend her special day with her! I love this woman. She makes all the difference in our family.
8. Today is the last day we can jump on our trampoline for the season. When Riley gets home from work, he's determined to take it down. Sad, sad day. We depended on that tramp as a quick way to get H's energy out. Any ideas?

9. My dad came down to Eastern Idaho for the funeral and we spent most of Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday with him. Hinder loves his Papa, and so do I. Daddy's always up for a good time, and we took advantage of his stay with lots of yummy food, cards games, laughing, and good conversation. It's always sad to see him go.

10. We had our first big dump of snow last weekend. Luckily, most of this week was temperate and a lot of the snow melted, but I think we're going to get round two starting tomorrow. And I bet this time it's here to stay. Welcome again, winter!

11. Along with winter, tomorrow brings much needed girl time at my open-house baby shower. So excited to hang with adults, and so grateful for a few good friends who threw this together. I'm excited!

One step closer to welcoming Baby #2.

Halloween 2011

Halloween Overkill would have to be the title of this years festivities. We started Thursday evening with a local carnival and didn't stop the parties until Trick-or-Treating Halloween night.

Hinder couldn't decide between a pirate (which was actually Riley's costume) or a clown, so he was both!

With cousin Archer waiting for a hayride

Excited little clown!

Peg-legged pirate and a clown. I dressed as an 8 ball to compliment my round shape.

My brother, sis-in-law and sweet nephew white-trashin' it up! I can't get over Archer's adorable mullet. (how's that for an oxymoron?!)

Ready for trick-or-treating. Arrr!!

The neighborhood kids itching to get started.

In no time at all, H had this trick-or-treat business figured out.

Happy Halloween!

For Dallas: Jack-O-Lanterns

Here's our finished Jack-O-Lanterns.

Riley's all aglow

Mine...not as impressive. I decided to veer away from the traditional triangle faced pumpkin that I usually do. The results? Not so good.

Still not impressive in the light.

Riley's pumpkin carved.

Today is Day 1 of our Spectacular Halloween Weekend!

Fall Traditions

With family visiting this weekend, it was the perfect opportunity to venture to the pumpkin patch. I really love fall traditions.

Next I'll have to get a shot of our jack-o-lantern masterpieces!

Idiots Guide to Canning

This summer was the first time I had any desire (and time) to devote to trying out the business of food preservation. It's been an adventure, and I'll admit, strangely addicting.
I'm a total novice at all of this. Seriously. I had to google everything. If my grandmothers glanced at my google history they would find things like "what's a canning lid?", "what size should I cut my green beans?", "what's a water bath", "diseases caused by improper canning", etc.
I would be so embarrassed.
But along the way, I figured out three simple rules that saved my sanity.
(This is in no way an all-inclusive list of the rules of canning. If you want one of those, ask your friendly, local, geriatric grandmother. If you want proof that even the dumbest-among-us has the potential to can peaches, then continue reading...)

1. Keep it simple.

(strawberry freezer jam. Easiest. Thing. Ever)

I started with simple things like freezer jam. It has, like, three ingredients. I didn't have to venture into canning or any of that. Just mashed berries and mixed pectin. It's always good for the self-esteem to have a success to start, and I figured freezer jam is pretty fail-proof.

(stewed tomatoes)

Keeping it simple also means not trying to do too much at once. If the thought of canning 115 lbs. of tomatoes at once overwhelms you (like it does me...), then don't do it. I did a few cans every so often. Never taking more than a few hours of my time.

I also decided that this year, my pilot year, I wouldn't give a rip about how the end product looked. These babies aren't meant for county fairs! Lots of experts in the field of canning make the most beautiful, golden peaches, and pears that perfectly "spoon" in the jar. Not me. Not this time. Maybe later...
2. Strength in Numbers!

(green beans, apple pie filling, applesauce)

Always get together with a friend when trying something new or more complicated. It will do two things. #1. It splits the work in half. #2. Makes it a loss less overwhelming when trying to remember steps, temperatures, times, etc.
My sister-in-law and I tackled the green beans together. Without her, I would have a crate of rotting green beans in my garage. A friend invited me to help with her apple processing, and I jumped at the chance.

(freezer corn and strawberry kiwi jam)

Getting together with a friend also splits any costs. And it's tons more enjoyable. Recently, one of my best friends and I spent hours picking, husking, washing, boiling, and cutting corn. Sounds like cruel and unusual punishment, except that it wasn't! It was awesome. I don't think there was a lull in the convo the entire time.

3. Use what's available.

(peaches canned with my mom in Washington)

If I had to spend a gob of cash buying jars, lids, tops, AND the produce...there is NO way I would waste my time canning. The only way it's worth the work is if you're getting food for cheap or free, right?!

So we figured out how to use what was available. In fact, the entire reason it entered my little mind to bottle things is because Grandma Hurst gifted me with loads and loads of jars. (They have been sitting empty for about...3 1/2 years. It took some time to muster my motivation!) And then my own mother gave me her extra water bath.

All I had to buy was the lids, which were exceptionally cheap. The fruit and veg I mostly got from my own garden, Bountiful Basket excess, and from friends who had trees or fields ripe for the picking!

(pears left over from my Bountiful Basket)

Now our pantry is full, I feel a little more domestic and healthy. And we probably saved a few dollars on our grocery bill. A winning situation!

Golfing

This little lady turned eight a few days ago and was baptised! I wish we could have been there, but alas, eight hours in the car= suicidal thoughts for a pregnant woman.

We love you, Dakota!

In other news...there hasn't been any other news. Our lives have been pretty humdrum around here, and I really like it that way sometimes. Here are a few pictures of one of the last warm days of summer.

Hinder earned a golf trip with dad by filling up a sticker chart. He got an animal sticker every time he went to bed and STAYED there. Worked like a charm.

He had such a blast and loves to hang with his daddio.

These pictures feel like they were taken months ago, rather than a few weeks, now that the weather is full-fledged autumn.

My Mother's Mothers

Nesting must be a real thing, because lately I have no other desire but to complete projects and get things in order. I wish I could have this kind of motivation when I wasn't so large, clumsy, scatter-brained, and easily tired. Cruel irony.

One project involved getting pictures of my mom, Grammy, and great grandmother. I'm framing and grouping the pictures in Baby Girl's (affectionately named "Heart Balloon" by Hinder, because hearts and balloons are the most beautiful thing he can think of) room. I want her to see the women she came from. And I want to see the women I came from.

(Great Grandmother "GranMary")

(My Grammy)

(My Mama)
They're beautiful.
